Diagnostics is the process of figuring out why a warning light is on or why the car is running rough. We scan the computer for trouble codes, but the code is only a starting point — it points to a system, not always the exact part. From there we test the sensors, wiring, and components in that system so we replace what's actually broken instead of throwing parts at it.
A check-engine light can mean something as small as a loose gas cap or as serious as a misfire that will ruin a catalytic converter if you keep driving. Guessing — or letting a parts-store code reader sell you a sensor — often means paying for parts that don't fix anything. A real diagnosis tells you what's wrong, how urgent it is, and what the repair costs before you commit.
