What That Check-Engine Light Actually Means

The check-engine light is one of the most misunderstood things on your dash. Sometimes it's nothing. Sometimes it's the early warning for a repair that gets a lot more expensive if you ignore it. The trick is knowing which one you're looking at.

Steady light vs. flashing light

A steady check-engine light means the computer has logged a problem but the car is safe to drive to the shop. A flashing light is different. That usually means a misfire serious enough to damage the catalytic converter, and you shouldn't keep driving on it.

The code is a starting point, not the answer

A parts-store scanner can read the trouble code, but the code points to a system, not always the exact broken part. A code that says "lean condition" could be a vacuum leak, a dirty sensor, or a failing fuel pump. Replacing the wrong part is how people spend money without fixing anything.
